Our Story
BuildTycoon is, first and foremost, a strategy game — a skill-based football management game played directly in your browser, created by a team that has been developing game economies based on player-controlled markets since before the industry used the term “Play-to-Earn”. This story covers fifteen years of experimentation in designing player-driven strategy game economies.
2010 — The Founding Concept
Romanian designer Bogdan Hodorogea devised an original strategy game model: a persistent, procedural game economy in which virtual value is created through the strategic decisions of players, traded on player-controlled markets, and part of it can be withdrawn, within the limits set by the game, with BuildTycoon paying out USDC for the BTU accumulated. The core idea: a strategy game that rewards players’ skill and management decisions, years before this type of economy was built on blockchain.
MarketGlory — The First Implementation
Launched in 2011, MarketGlory proved this strategy game concept at scale. Players founded companies, produced goods through procedural systems, took part in player-controlled markets, and part of the balance they accumulated could be withdrawn within the limits set by the game. The game gathered millions of registered accounts and ranked below 1,400 in the global Alexa ranking, becoming the most visited browser strategy game in the world at its peak.
GoalTycoon — The Sports Economy Evolves
GoalTycoon (2013) turned the same framework into a football management strategy game. Managers built their clubs with stadiums, training centres and facilities that generated virtual revenue through persistent, player-controlled game economies. The game became one of the leading online football management strategy games worldwide.
BuildTycoon — The Current Implementation
The successor to GoalTycoon is a strategy game that runs entirely in the browser, with no download at all. Players manage clubs, compete in competitions and take part in player-controlled markets, available in fourteen languages.
The Four Core Principles
The strategy game philosophy has remained the same since 2010:
- Procedural economy (virtual value is built by the development team)
- Persistent economy (progress is preserved between sessions)
- Player-generated value (internal markets based on supply and demand, the result of strategic decisions)
- Withdrawal (rewarding real performance — as in chess or football, the best are rewarded)
2022 — The Critical Challenge
The company ceased operations after eleven uninterrupted years. The emergence of blockchain-based Play-to-Earn projects, with their speculative elements, shifted players’ attention away from established strategy games focused on the real economic substance of the game.
2026 — Technological Rebirth
Hodorogea returned to rebuild the strategy game for the Web3 environment, adding instant, on-chain verifiable withdrawals, MetaMask wallet connection and additional account verification and protection measures. CaveToKingdom became KingdomToEmpire.com; GoalTycoon evolved into BuildTycoon.com, with extended funding mechanisms through the Federation Fund.
Future Developments
New strategy game projects are in development, continuing the legacy of MarketGlory and CaveToKingdom, with the focus on the game’s economic structure rather than on token speculation.
